In the year 2000, the Southern Oregon Indian Center (SOIC) began volunteering with the Rogue Valley Oregon Youth Authority (OYA) to provide culturally grounded support for Native youth within the juvenile justice system. From the beginning, SOIC offered consistent programming centered on cultural connection and healing, including Native-centered Sunday services, weekly craft nights, and sweat lodge ceremonies held twice a month. These programs created meaningful opportunities for youth to engage with traditional teachings, community members, and cultural values.
As the partnership with OYA grew, SOIC expanded its efforts to include an annual Pow-Wow each September, bringing drums, dancers, and cultural leaders into the facility to honor youth and strengthen their sense of identity and belonging. Built on long-term collaboration and trust, this partnership continues today, allowing SOIC to provide ongoing cultural programming that supports healing, positive growth, and connection to community for youth involved with OYA.

Through our ongoing work with the Oregon Youth Authority, SOIC has supported youth by providing regular cultural services, traditional activities, and annual pow-wow programming. These efforts help strengthen cultural identity, encourage emotional well-being, and foster meaningful connections between youth, community members, and cultural leaders - impact that continues to grow through long-term engagement and trust.
